Minimising disruption and maximising efficiency will be central to the construction of the North Hykeham Relief Road, with Lincolnshire County Council outlining a carefully planned delivery approach.
Cllr David East, executive member for highways, said the scheme has been designed with a clear focus on safety, efficiency and reducing the impact on local communities. He explained that extensive preparation has gone into developing a phased construction programme, allowing work to progress in a controlled manner while maintaining access and limiting pressure on surrounding roads.
A key element of the strategy is the use of modern construction methods, including prefabrication and dedicated logistics planning, aimed at streamlining delivery while maintaining high quality standards.
Dedicated haul road to remove thousands of vehicle movements
One of the most significant features of the project will be the construction of an 8km haul road linking the A46 and A15. This temporary route will be used exclusively by construction traffic, helping to keep heavy vehicles off the local road network.
According to Sam Edwards, head of highways infrastructure, the haul road is expected to remove more than 150,000 vehicle movements from surrounding roads, improving safety and reducing congestion for local residents.
The project will also prioritise material reuse, with over one million tonnes of excavated material being repurposed within the scheme. For example, material removed near Station Road will be reused to form embankments for the River Witham bridge, significantly reducing waste and limiting the need for additional transport movements.
Measures to protect communities and the environment
A range of mitigation measures will be introduced throughout construction to reduce the impact on nearby communities. These include noise monitoring, dust suppression and ongoing engagement with local residents to address concerns as they arise.
Environmental considerations will also play a key role, with flood risk management and silt control measures integrated into the construction process. The project team is working closely with key stakeholders, including RAF Waddington, the Environment Agency and local drainage boards, to safeguard surrounding infrastructure and assets.
Modern construction techniques to support delivery
The scheme will incorporate a variety of advanced construction methods designed to improve efficiency and safety. These include:
Phased construction of junctions and roundabouts to maintain traffic flow
Installation of a temporary crossing over the River Witham
Use of top-down construction techniques for the Station Road bridge
Targeted utility diversions using trenching and directional drilling to minimise surface disruption
Continuous Flight Auger (CFA) piling to reduce noise and speed up foundation works
Reinforced earth solutions to create durable bridge supports using recycled site materials
