A busy crossroads on the A483 near Oswestry, identified as one of the Midlands’ most hazardous junctions, may be transformed into a roundabout, local authorities have suggested.
The proposal was discussed at a public meeting held at Llanymynech Memorial Hall on Thursday, which drew over 140 residents eager to learn about potential safety improvements.
The event was organised by North Shropshire MP Helen Morgan, who has campaigned for upgrades at the junction for several years.
The meeting comes after two accidents occurred at the crossroads within just two hours on 6 October this year, underscoring concerns over the junction’s safety.
Attendees included representatives from National Highways, Shropshire Council, West Mercia Police, and neighbouring MP Steve Witherden from Montgomeryshire and Glyndwr in Wales.
Joe Walmsley, National Highways route manager, said the authority has been reviewing the crossroads for some time and is actively working with MPs and local bodies on potential solutions.
“We are progressing three separate projects,” Walmsley explained. “One focuses on drainage and road surface improvements, while the other two are safety-related. The route safety scheme will look at factors such as speed limits, signage, visibility of road markings, and enforcement measures.”
The roundabout is among the safety measures under consideration, aiming to reduce accidents and improve traffic flow at the notorious junction.
