A BEWDLEY councillor has slammed a decision to grant work permits for two main roads at the same time as "unacceptable."

Councillor Dan Morehead, who represents Bewdley on Worcestershire County Council, has said there needs to be "far more consideration" about the impact of work permits before they are granted.

It comes after work permits were granted on the Stourport and Kidderminster Roads near the town.

Councillor Morehead said it's not the first time he's made a complaint about the issue.

Sharing his concerns on Facebook last week, councillor Morehead, said: "I have yet again made a complaint to WCC Highways about the unacceptable granting of works permits on both the Stourport and Kidderminster Roads at the same time.

"There needs to be far more consideration about the wider impact of these permits before granting them.

"Allowing these at the same time, knowing the impact the flood defence works are having on residents and businesses, is totally unacceptable and ill-considered.

"Please be assured I will be escalating this further within highways".

In response, Karl Perks, Worcestershire County Council's cabinet member for highways and transport,  said: "Due to the high volume of permit requests we receive, it is not always possible to prevent multiple sets of roadworks from taking place at the same time. We work hard to coordinate these activities to minimise disruption and ensure the least possible impact on the road network.

"The recent works on Kidderminster Road and Stourport Road both related to the provision of essential utility services for developments that had received planning permission. Under the New Roads & Streetworks Act, utility companies have a right to maintain and upgrade their infrastructure to support the occupation of new homes.

"The work was scheduled within the most appropriate time windows available with manual operation of traffic signals during peak periods."
