Costain, the infrastructure solutions provider, has been selected to design and build a new junction on the M5 motorway.
The contract, awarded through the Regional Delivery Partnership (RDP) framework, is valued at approximately £100 million over a five-year programme.
Junction 22A will be constructed between Burnham-On-Sea and Bridgwater in Somerset, providing access to the Gravity Smart Campus and the £4 billion Agratas gigafactory, set to become the UK’s largest electric vehicle battery manufacturing facility.
The new junction will include north-facing slip roads and is expected to reduce congestion on the motorway south of the Huntspill River.
Costain will act as both delivery integration partner and main works contractor, responsible for designing and constructing the junction before handing it over to National Highways.
Its responsibilities will cover design, engineering, programme delivery, and supply chain management, with support from WSP as design partner.
Alex Vaughan, CEO of Costain, said:
“This contract builds on our extensive highways delivery experience and strong partnership with National Highways. We will work with our supply chain to design and deliver a junction that provides essential access to the new gigafactory and supports economic growth in this region. This project underlines Costain’s commitment to delivering critical national infrastructure that improves lives and supports the UK’s growth ambitions.”
