Construction work is set to begin next week on a major active travel project in central Bath, marking a key step toward creating safer, greener, and more accessible routes across the city.
The Bath Quays Links scheme will transform travel along Lower Bristol Road and Green Park Road, making walking, wheeling, and cycling easier and more enjoyable.
The project will also enhance access to the Bath Quays Bridge, which opened in 2022, connecting key employment and residential areas on both sides of the River Avon.
The improvements include new segregated cycle paths, upgraded pedestrian and cycle crossings, and extensive pavement, carriageway, and drainage enhancements.
Work on Green Park Road will begin on Monday 20 October, with completion expected within 10 months. Construction on Lower Bristol Road is planned to follow next year. To reduce disruption over the festive period, work will pause between 21 November and 5 January.
Once complete next summer, Bath Quays Links will form a central part of the city’s growing active travel network, connecting with other projects such as improvements to National Cycle Route 4, the Weston-to-City Centre route, and the Bath Riverline.
Councillor Lucy Hodge, Cabinet Member for Sustainable Transport Delivery, said:
“Bath Quays Links represents a major step forward for active travel in our city. We’re creating a network that makes walking, wheeling, and cycling safer and more appealing. This scheme is a vital piece of that puzzle and will make active travel the natural choice for shorter journeys across Bath.”
Helen Godwin, Mayor of the West of England, added:
“Bath Quays is one of the region’s most exciting regeneration projects — part of our new Growth Strategy that will deliver jobs, homes, and business opportunities while improving air quality and unlocking the riverside. The £4.7 million regional investment, alongside Bath & North East Somerset Council, will bring visible improvements for residents and visitors. By getting the basics right now — better walking and cycling routes and improved roads — we’re laying the foundation for a stronger, more connected transport system across the West of England.”
The Bath Quays Links project forms a key part of the council’s Active Travel Masterplan, which supports long-term goals to reduce congestion, enhance air quality, and promote healthier, more sustainable lifestyles.
