A collapsed sewer in Cheltenham will cause part of a busy road to be closed for more than weeks. A diversion has been set up because of the problem in Hatherley Road, Up Hatherley.
The closure is from near to the road’s junction with qCaernarvon Road up to the turning point for Coombe Glen Lane. The issue, which began at the weekend, is seeing traffic being diverted via Coombe Glen Lane, Carmarthen Road and Caernarvon Road.
Pumping machines have been set up close to Coombe Glen Lane. At the other end of the closed section, a bus stop close to Caernarvon Court has been suspended.
Gloucestershire county councillor Roger Whyborn (LD, Benhall and Up Hatherley) said, on social media: “Hatherley Road is closed from Caernarvon Road to Coombe Glen Lane, due to a collapsed sewer. Severn Trent have advised Gloucestershire Highways this is likely to be for in excess of three weeks; the collapsed sewer is 6 metres deep.
“This means that the work is going to take several days just to prepare, before digging starts and it will be quite loud, and might go on through the Easter weekend. Vehicle diversions are via Carmarthen Road, as would appear to be buses. More information may follow about buses.”
