COLAS SECURES BLACK COUNTRY CARRIAGEWAY SURFACING FRAMEWORK


Dudley Metropolitan Borough Council has awarded Colas Ltd a place on the three-year term contract for carriageway surfacing on behalf of the Black Country which includes Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council, Walsall Council and the City of Wolverhampton.

Colas is one of three contractors appointed to deliver surfacing works to the 3,650 kilometres of highways the authorities are responsible for maintaining and the works will be 100% delivered by local Colas teams.

National Operations Director David Ogden said “The Colas team are going from strength to strength in the West Midlands which creates opportunities for us to bring our global innovations that deliver reduced carbon solutions to the region. The expansion also creates more opportunities to support the local communities we have been part of for decades.”

This appointment continues to see Colas establish its position as a key contractor in the West Midlands having recently been appointed to the Black Country Minor Works framework and securing the National Highways Area 9 maintenance and response contract. In addition, the Midlands based team also support Coventry City Council on the Civil Engineering and Traffic Safety framework and are delivering the A34 sprint scheme part 1 for Transport for West Midlands in Walsall as well as the A46 Stoneleigh junction improvement scheme.

With a strong commitment to decarbonisation, Colas will transition to an electric or alternative fuel fleet to deliver the contract. The team will work collaboratively with the Local Authorities to seek low carbon solutions wherever possible through their ability to draw on the expertise locally in the UK, and from the international Colas Group where innovative decarbonised solutions are a high priority for the R&D teams.

As a well-established contractor in the West Midlands, Colas already has strong local community links, and this new contract with see them further extend their work in creating opportunities for the long term unemployed as well as boosting opportunities for youth employment and disadvantaged communities. The team will continue to work with Dudley College as part of their apprenticeship offering.
