The Chartered Institution of Highways & Transportation (CIHT) has launched a new match funding initiative to help contractors continue investing in supervisor training during ongoing changes to CITB funding arrangements.

Under the scheme, CIHT Learn will match contributions from the CITB Employer Network for its Supervisor Skills Level 1 (SSL1) and Level 2 (SSL2) courses. This reduces the cost to employers from £250 to £175 per learner, offering a more straightforward and accessible alternative to traditional CITB funding routes.

The move comes as many organisations face uncertainty around training budgets due to evolving CITB funding structures and varying levels of support. CIHT’s approach aims to remove barriers by simplifying the process, enabling employers to maintain workforce development without delays or complex administration.

Sue Percy, Chief Executive of CIHT, said the initiative responds to the sector’s ongoing skills challenges, particularly at supervisory level. She noted that reducing costs and simplifying access to training will help employers continue developing capable leaders while funding systems transition.

The Supervisor Skills programmes, developed by the Supply Chain Safety Leadership Group and delivered through CIHT Learn, focus on key areas including safety leadership, communication, wellbeing, environmental awareness and management skills. Delivered digitally and on-demand, the courses are designed to fit around operational demands and suit a wide range of learners, from new supervisors to those managing more complex responsibilities.

Mel Clarke, National Highways’ Director of Health, Safety and Wellbeing, welcomed the programme, highlighting the importance of skilled supervisors in maintaining high safety standards across the network.

Employers can now access match-funded places immediately, with registration available through the CIHT Learn platform.
