A historic bridge in Northern Ireland’s countryside has been closed due to safety concerns, just three years after undergoing major repair work.
The Department for Infrastructure (DfI) confirmed that Kilrea Bridge, which carries the B64 Bann Road over the River Bann near the village of Kilrea, has been closed in both directions since 20 September after inspectors identified vertical and diagonal cracks in the bridge’s retaining wall. Officials warned that the cracks could indicate potential structural weaknesses, prompting the precautionary closure.
“Safety is our top priority,” said a DfI spokesperson. “The bridge will remain closed until engineers can fully assess the retaining wall and carry out any necessary repairs. We understand the inconvenience this causes for local residents and commuters and are working to implement a temporary solution as quickly as possible.”
Originally constructed in 1783, Kilrea Bridge is a listed structure recognized for its historical and architectural significance. The bridge was previously closed in 2022 for around five weeks for a £225,000 maintenance project. That work included repairs to the wingwalls, waterproofing the bridge deck, and restoring the parapets.
Local residents expressed concern over the latest closure. “This bridge is vital for our daily commute and access to services,” said Mary O’Neill, a Kilrea resident. “It’s frustrating to face another closure so soon after the last repairs, but I appreciate that safety has to come first.”
Traffic has been diverted onto alternative routes while engineers assess the bridge. According to the DfI, once a temporary fix is in place, the road may reopen to traffic while plans for permanent repairs are developed.
John McLaughlin, a local business owner, said the closure is already impacting the area. “Deliveries and customers are having to take longer routes. I hope the repairs are done quickly, but it’s reassuring to know they are taking structural safety seriously.”
Kilrea Bridge, with its long history and importance to local transport, has become a focal point for discussions about the challenges of maintaining historic infrastructure in rural areas, balancing preservation with safety and modern traffic demands.
