Campaign for change on high-speed road that's seen three crashes in five years

Residents in Southwell are clubbing together to demand that a section of 60mph road has its speed limit reduced to 30mph, after three crashes in five years. Hockerton Road, which turns into Normanton Road, is governed by the national speed limit all the way up to a one-lane bridge on which drivers coming into the town have to give way.

But many don't, residents claim, instead opting to speed up to try and get over the bridge before the vehicle coming the other way reaches it. And in the opposite direction, drivers often speed to well above 30 upon seeing the national speed limit sign before they've left the town - a move which locals say one day will cause a fatality.

"It does damage to our building and to the bridge, and risks the safety of people walking up and down and trying to cross it," says Alex McMillan, who lives in Greet Lily Mill right next to the bridge. Since himself and wife Andrea moved in seven years ago, there have been two major crashes just outside their home.

One, in 2019, saw a car plough over the right hand side of the bridge and into the small wall encapsulating the Greet Lily Mill car park. The driver was reportedly unharmed and later drove off after a breakdown company towed his car out of the ditch.

More recently, in July 2023, a car ploughed through railings on the other side and ended up in the trees overhanging the river below. Police attended and cordoned off the scene.

"The car was upside down", says Alex. "I don't know how she survived. The fire brigade had to come and get her out."
