The Flemish Government has approved the initial phase of the €1.4 billion Limburg Noord-Zuid link, a major infrastructure project in Belgium that will form part of the European TEN-T network. Construction is expected to begin in 2027.
The project includes upgrading 8.8 km of existing roads and constructing a new junction connecting to the E314 motorway. In addition, two tunnels will be built beneath Houthalen-Helchteren in Limburg Province, alongside multiple bridges and 17 km of dedicated cycleways, providing safe, segregated routes for cyclists and other vulnerable road users.
The North-South connection aims to improve transport between Eindhoven and Hasselt. Authorities have highlighted that the current Noord-Zuid junction (N74/N715) passes through Houthalen-Helchteren, creating congestion and road safety challenges. The Complex Project Noord-Zuid Limburg seeks to enhance traffic flow, strengthen public transport options, and upgrade cycling infrastructure.
By redesigning the junction and constructing tunnels beneath Houthalen-Helchteren, the project will provide a more reliable route for vehicles while freeing surface areas for public use. Engineering consultancy Tractebel has been responsible for the project’s design work.
