Belfast International Airport has officially opened the first phase of its £100 million redevelopment programme, marking a significant milestone in a long-term investment aimed at expanding capacity, improving passenger experience and modernising airport operations.
The newly completed phase includes a major terminal extension featuring upgraded security facilities, enlarged passenger circulation areas and an enhanced retail offering at Northern Ireland’s busiest airport.
Part of a wider five-year investment strategy being delivered by airport owner VINCI Airports, the project introduces a redesigned arrivals forecourt alongside a significantly expanded duty-free and retail space designed to support future passenger growth.
A key feature of the development is the new security hall, which has been purpose-built to accommodate next-generation screening technology. The airport said the upgraded facilities will improve passenger processing efficiency while helping the airport manage increasing traffic volumes over the coming years.
The first phase of the programme was officially opened by Northern Ireland First Minister Michelle O’Neill and Deputy First Minister Emma Little-Pengelly, alongside representatives from VINCI Airports.
Further phases of the £100 million investment programme are scheduled over the coming years and are expected to include additional departure gates, expanded seating areas and wider operational improvements focused on efficiency and sustainability.
Belfast International Airport said the redevelopment forms part of its long-term strategy to strengthen regional connectivity, support tourism and trade, and prepare the airport for sustained growth in passenger demand.
The airport added that the investment will help ensure the facility is equipped to meet both current operational requirements and future expansion plans while improving the overall travel experience for passengers using the airport.
