Proposals to upgrade walking, wheeling and cycling routes in Andover will go before Hampshire County Council in early March.

The plans focus on improving links between the town centre and neighbourhoods to the east, with enhancements proposed along London Road, Batchelors Barn Road, Acre Path and through Vigo Park.

If approved, the scheme would strengthen connections between residential areas, the railway station, schools and key local destinations. The intention is to make short journeys easier and safer for those travelling on foot, by bike or using mobility aids.

The project forms part of Hampshire County Council’s wider strategy to build a coherent active travel network across the town. It aligns with the Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan (LCWIP), adopted in 2025, which sets out a long-term approach to improving safety, accessibility and sustainable transport options.

Councillor Lulu Bowerman, Executive Member for Highways and Passenger Transport, said the proposals were designed to support the town’s growth.

“As more housing developments are given the go-ahead, it’s important that the right travel infrastructure is put in place to enable people to travel easily from their homes to local amenities, including schools, sports facilities, town centre shops and onward transport connections,” she said.

“This scheme represents the next phase of plans to improve cycling and walking across Andover.”

The route would integrate with ongoing improvements along Western Avenue and provide links to a future connection serving Walworth Business Park and Picket Piece. Together, these schemes aim to create a more joined-up network, reducing reliance on cars for local journeys.

Councillors are expected to consider the proposals at a meeting in early March, with a decision determining whether the next phase of delivery can proceed.
