Amey marked National Apprenticeship Week (NAW) 2026 by hosting a new artificial intelligence workshop for its apprentices, underlining its commitment to equipping early-career professionals with future-ready skills.

This year’s National Apprenticeship Week theme, Skills for Life, highlights the rapid pace of change driven by AI and the increasing importance of digital capability across all sectors of the economy.

To mark the occasion, Amey welcomed 25 apprentices from across the business to its newly launched Innovation Studio — a dedicated space designed for experimenting with emerging technologies and developing solutions that deliver improved outcomes for clients and communities. During the full-day session, apprentices worked alongside the company’s AI and Innovation team to explore the fundamentals of Agentic AI before designing and building their own AI agents.

The workshop also featured contributions from external partners, including Microsoft and BPP, who shared insights into how AI is transforming workplaces and enhancing productivity, decision-making and innovation.

Aman Haque, a Transport Infrastructure Apprentice at Amey, described the experience as inspiring and said it had expanded his understanding of how AI can be used effectively in a professional setting. He added that the session had given him greater confidence in using AI tools to support his role.

Michael Burgess, Chief People Officer at Amey and a former apprentice himself, said National Apprenticeship Week is an opportunity to celebrate the fresh ideas and ambition apprentices bring to the organisation. He emphasised the importance of staying ahead of evolving workforce needs and ensuring apprentices develop practical AI skills that will help them succeed in a changing environment.

Liam Cox, AI Workforce Specialist at Microsoft, said it was encouraging to see apprentices engage so enthusiastically with AI technologies, including building AI agents using Microsoft 365 Copilot. He noted that developing AI capability among early-career professionals is essential for driving future innovation across industries.

Amey’s early careers recruitment campaign begins this month, with plans to recruit 90 apprentices by the end of 2026. Of these, 60 positions are currently open. Apprentices will work on live projects across transport, infrastructure and defence programmes, while developing expertise in areas such as engineering, quantity surveying, commercial, digital and corporate functions.

As part of its ambition to become a skills-enabled organisation, Amey is embedding AI training across all early careers programmes to ensure apprentices and graduates gain confidence in using AI tools aligned to their interests and long-term career goals.

Further details about apprenticeship opportunities and the application process are available via the Amey Early Careers website.
