An investigation into the felling of trees along a section of the A47 is still ongoing a year after it was launched.

Officials for National Highways have been looking into the mysterious felling of trees near the westbound A1075 exit for more than a year.

A time lapse on Google Maps shows how the trees along the road on the outskirts of Dereham have been dwindling since 2008, with 2023's record showing only one mature tree remained.

Dereham Town Council raised an alarm to National Highways in 2023 after it had noticed a decline in the number of trees.

It has now been a year on from when the case began and the circumstances around the felling are still unknown.

When news of the investigation was reported, the town council was concerned the lack of trees would leave wildlife vulnerable to being struck by passing vehicles.

A spokesman said at the time the trees helped protect barn owls and bats from flying low across the dual carriageway.

It suggested the trees be replanted but National Highways is unlikely to come to a decision until the investigation has concluded.

A National Highways spokesman said: "A legal process to establish those responsible for the felling of mature trees on National Highways land by the A47 at Dereham is continuing.

"Until that process is complete we cannot provide any further details.

"National Highways takes it environmental considerations very seriously and will work with the relevant authorities to take appropriate action against those responsible."

A spokesman for Dereham Town Council said: "It is reassuring to know that National Highways are fully investigating this matter.

"If it turns out that a crime has been committed, then it is right for justice to be served on whoever is found to be responsible."
