A417 dualling scheme progresses as Bauer chosen for piling works

Bauer Technologies will install the piled foundations for four bridges on National Highways' A417 “missing link” road upgrade scheme in the Cotswolds.

National Highways' up to £500M A417 scheme will dual a 5.5km section of road between Gloucester and Swindon. It will improve the connection between the two dual carriageway sections of the A417 at Brockley and Cowley and the connection between the M4 and M5.

Kier Transportation won the £460M main works contract in April 2022.

It has appointed Bauer to install the piled foundations for four bridge structures on the scheme. These structures include the Gloucestershire Way Crossing, Stockwell Overbridge, Cowley Overbridge and Shab Hill Junction.

Bauer Technologies managing directors Paul Doyle and John Theos said: “Bauer is delighted to be part of the A417 missing link project, which not only allows us to showcase our advanced engineering capabilities but also our dedication to sustainable construction practices. This project is a model for future infrastructure development, combining technical innovation with environmental responsibility.”

Kier Transportation project director Gavin Jones added: “We are pleased to be working with Bauer on the A417 missing link, which is a fantastic project in the heart of the Cotswolds surrounded by an area of outstanding natural beauty and a site of special scientific interest.

“The strength of our supply chain partners is integral to the success of this project. Together with Bauer, our other supply chain partners, and our client National Highways, we look forward to delivering vital new infrastructure that will benefit road users and the local community for years to come.”

Work on the project is ramping up this year with “offline” construction - where the new stretch of the A417 is built away from the current road - expected to account for much of the works during 2024.

In April of this year, National Highways began the offline build by implementing overnight closures at several locations to allow it to carry out earthworks, lay new surfaces and paint road markings.

The work is in preparation for the construction of foundations for the new bridges later in the year.

Kier Transportation advertised the £35M earthworks contract as part of a wider £84M programme of works that it is subcontracting in January of this year.

The A417 provides an important route between Gloucester and Swindon that helps connect the Midlands and North to the South of England.

Minister of state for transport Huw Merriman approved the major road upgrade to the A417 in November 2022.

Construction began in early 2023 and the project is due to be completed in 2027.
