A section of the A38 in Devon has been closed while engineers carry out emergency repairs to a bridge expansion joint, National Highways has confirmed.
The closure affects both lanes of the eastbound carriageway between the B3380 at Lower Dean and the A384 at Buckfastleigh, a key route for local and regional traffic. National Highways said engineers would remain on site overnight, with work expected to continue until 06:00 GMT on Wednesday.
Understanding the Issue
The problem involves the steel expansion joints on the bridge. These joints are designed to allow for structural movement caused by changes in temperature, shrinkage of construction materials, and the stresses imposed by heavy traffic. When these components become defective, they can pose a safety risk to vehicles, particularly at high speeds, making immediate repairs essential.
Expansion joints are a standard feature of bridges and other large road structures. They allow the bridge deck to expand and contract without causing cracks or damage to the roadway, ensuring the long-term integrity of the structure. Failures of this type, while relatively uncommon, are treated as emergencies to prevent accidents and further damage.
Traffic Disruption
Motorists are advised to seek alternative routes and expect delays while repairs are carried out. The closure comes at a time when the A38 serves as a critical link for commuters, freight traffic, and local communities in Devon.
National Highways has urged drivers to follow diversion signs and plan their journeys in advance.
Previous Incidents and Maintenance
The A38 has occasionally experienced closures for similar maintenance work, as part of ongoing efforts to maintain the safety and reliability of Devon’s road network. Regular inspections of bridges, including monitoring of expansion joints, are carried out to identify potential issues before they become serious.
By carrying out these repairs promptly, National Highways aims to minimise long-term disruption and ensure that the bridge remains safe for all users.
