The A33 northbound between Reading and Basingstoke will be closed overnight after a 1km-long crack was discovered along the inside lane of the Swallowfield Bypass.

Wokingham Borough Council, which maintains the route, announced the closure will take place from 8pm to 6am to allow for a temporary repair.

The affected section runs between the Hampshire boundary and Mereoak Lane, with a diversion in place via Odiham Road, B3349 Basingstoke Road, and Basingstoke Road.

In a statement, the council said:

“This temporary repair will allow us to safely reopen the cracked lane and prevent rain from entering, which could cause further damage. Further work will be required to address the root cause of the problem.
We’ve taken samples from the road and will analyse them to determine the cause and the next steps. Apologies for the short notice and thank you for your patience while we carry out these essential works.”

Motorists are advised to follow the diversion and plan for additional travel time during the overnight closures.
