A major road improvement project at a key A1 junction in Lincolnshire has been postponed, with construction work now expected to begin later this summer.

The scheme, which was due to start on 1 June at Colsterworth, will see the full reconstruction of two heavily used roundabouts connecting the A151 with the A1 via northbound and southbound slip roads. Lincolnshire County Council confirmed the delay is due to unforeseen traffic management issues that require further planning before work can commence.

The project aims to improve safety and reliability at the junction, which carries thousands of vehicles every week and has shown signs of deterioration in recent years.

Councillor David East previously described the roundabouts as being in need of significant refurbishment, with the scheme involving the use of more than 3,000 tonnes of material to rebuild and strengthen the carriageway.

Once completed, the improvements are expected to provide a smoother and safer route for motorists while extending the lifespan of the junction for many years to come.

Councillor Charlotte Vernon said the road surface has begun to fail in several locations, resulting in cracking and the formation of potholes. She added that undertaking a full reconstruction now would prevent more extensive deterioration and disruption in the future.

The works will cover both roundabouts at the Colsterworth interchange, including sections of the A151 near the slip roads and surrounding approaches.

Details of any planned night-time or weekend closures will be announced closer to the start date, with the council expected to provide updated timelines and traffic management arrangements later this summer.
