More than £500,000 will be spent to reduce reckless and dangerous driving on Portsdown Hill, Hampshire, where four people have died and 61 others have been seriously injured over the past five years.
The improvement works, which will include average speed cameras, aim to reduce speeding and improve road safety along the route north of Portsmouth.
Hampshire Police and Crime Commissioner, Donna Jones, announced the funding at a public meeting in Farlington, stating:
“I’ve listened to the concerns of people living along Portsdown Hill and the surrounding areas and I’m taking action. The majority of road users are safe, but a minority are putting lives at risk. There have been 61 injury incidents over the past five years. It’s one of the most dangerous roads in Hampshire.
Other preventative measures will also be considered. Noise pollution from motorbikes and cars blights the lives of thousands of residents. This behaviour is unacceptable and can’t go on.”
The works will be delivered in partnership with Portsmouth City Council and Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary.
