A major programme to upgrade Cheshire’s water infrastructure is now under way, with United Utilities committing £4.5 million to replace almost 10km of ageing water mains in the Delamere area.
The scheme, which began this month, is expected to run for around nine months and is aimed at strengthening the reliability of local water supplies. By installing modern pipework, the project will help reduce leaks and minimise the risk of bursts, improving resilience across the network.
This work forms part of a wider £380 million investment by United Utilities to renew more than 925km of water mains across the North West over the next five years. Cheshire will account for a significant share of that programme, with over 159km of mains scheduled for replacement in the county.
Rob Moore, United Utilities’ county business lead for water in Cheshire, said the company is investing £55 million locally by 2030 to tackle leaks and bursts and maintain consistent water supplies for customers.
He explained that the new pipes are designed to be stronger and more flexible, enabling them to better withstand pressure changes and temperature fluctuations that often cause failures in older infrastructure. He added that the works near Tarporley represent an important part of the company’s long-term commitment to delivering high-quality drinking water, while thanking residents for their patience during the disruption.
The project will be delivered in three stages. Work began in Organsdale in January, before moving to Tarporley Road in late February. The final phase, scheduled for completion in September, will take place on Knights Lane. In total, the new pipeline will extend for approximately 9.8km.
Temporary traffic management and signed diversion routes will be in place while work is carried out, although access for local residents will be maintained throughout. Customers in the affected areas have already been informed about the scheme.
The work is being delivered by Network Plus on behalf of United Utilities.
