Passengers across south Wales are set to benefit from faster train repairs and improved service reliability following the completion of a £12 million engineering upgrade at Transport for Wales' Canton depot, bringing specialist maintenance capability into Wales for the first time.
A major investment in rail maintenance infrastructure is expected to improve reliability across the Welsh rail network after a £12 million bogie drop facility officially entered service at Transport for Wales' Canton depot in Cardiff.
Funded by the Welsh Government through Transport for Wales (TfW), the new facility enables engineers to remove, inspect, repair and replace the wheelsets and underframe equipment beneath trains without sending vehicles elsewhere for specialist work.
By carrying out this complex maintenance on-site, trains can be returned to passenger service more quickly, reducing downtime and improving fleet availability across south Wales and the Borders.
Bringing Specialist Engineering Capability Home
The new bogie drop represents a significant expansion of engineering capability within Wales, allowing maintenance previously undertaken at external facilities to be completed locally.
The investment supports Transport for Wales' growing fleet of modern rolling stock and is expected to play a key role in improving operational resilience as newer trains enter service across the network.
Keeping specialist engineering work in-house is also expected to reduce maintenance logistics, lower operational costs and strengthen long-term engineering expertise within Wales.
Improving Reliability for Passengers
Deputy Minister for Transport Mark Hooper, who officially opened the facility, said the investment forms part of the Welsh Government's wider ambition to build a more reliable and resilient railway.
He said increasing local maintenance capability would allow more trains to return to service faster, helping improve reliability and punctuality for passengers while supporting a modern transport network capable of meeting future demand.
The Canton depot plays a critical role in maintaining trains operating throughout south Wales and will become particularly valuable during the autumn months, when seasonal conditions such as leaf fall place additional pressure on fleet maintenance schedules.
Supporting the Next Generation of Rail Services
Transport for Wales' Chief Infrastructure Officer, Dan Tipper, described the project as a major milestone in the ongoing transformation of rail services across Wales and the Borders.
He said bringing specialist maintenance capability into the depot would significantly reduce repair times, improve fleet performance and help ensure more trains remain available for passengers every day.
The investment also aligns with the Welsh Government's strategy of strengthening Welsh-based rail engineering capability while reducing reliance on maintenance facilities elsewhere in Britain.
Building a More Resilient Railway
The new bogie drop is one of a series of investments being delivered to modernise Transport for Wales' maintenance infrastructure alongside the introduction of new rolling stock.
As demand for reliable public transport continues to grow, the enhanced engineering capability at Canton is expected to play a vital role in improving fleet resilience, reducing service disruption and supporting the long-term performance of Wales' railway network.
