When I Grow Up author speaks about His aspirations to make Construction a career of choice.

On the eve of World Book day, an annual event organized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, “When I Grow Up” author Rich Smith spoke about his aspirations for the publication and also the reasons behind it.

Speaking to Carrie Hilton, in a one to one interview he explained that a father of young children he wanted to break down the disconnect between parents home and work lives, explaining that many times mum or dad don’t actually explain to their children what it is they actually do, meaning that our sector had an unfair negative perception.

He went on to challenge the fact that our industry is facing a massive skills shortage and whilst not professing to have all of the answers Mr Smith expressed his hope that through the books we are, in some way able to change perceptions of the roles available within our industry.

He said, “The number of children reading the book now is absolutely massive and it would only need a really small percentage of them to actually turn around and say, actually that’s an industry for me … I like to think that it (the book) will have an impact in years to come.”

Asked what the future holds for the series Rich said,

“I would love to keep the series going (for as long as I can) …it would be nice to explore some of the roles in our industry in a bit more depth, giving children the opportunity to engage in a bit more depth with some of those roles and what they involve.”
