VolkerFitzpatrick lands £14m River Lea Crossing refurb

Appointed by Road Management Services (RMS), the project is a part of a broader initiative aimed at enhancing living and travel conditions in and around London.

The crossing is a key element of Transport for London’s (TfL) ongoing programme to create a safer, more reliable road network.

VolkerFitzpatrick will undertake essential maintenance and upgrades of the six-lane bridge, originally constructed in the 1930’s.

It spans 60 metres, featuring a two-pinned arch with 16 riveted steel ribs, and is the second busiest route in and out of London, accommodating approximately 40 million vehicles annually.

VolkerFitzpatrick’s strengthening works, below and above the bridge deck, aim to enhance the bridge’s long-term durability,

Ultimately the works should reduce the need for disruptive emergency repairs and minimise impact on local communities.

Work started on the site in August, with steelwork replacement and repainting beneath the bridge.

Above deck works which will include:

Waterproofing

Road resurfacing

Installation of new bridge parapets

Traffic management measures will be put in place to protect both the workforce and road users and the project team is working to ensure the work is conducted with minimal environmental impact.

This follows the announcement that VolkerFitzpatrick secured significant contract win from Transport for London (TfL) for the Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) at its Cockfosters depot as part of the £2.9 billion major Piccadilly Line Upgrade (PLU).

Diyal Nonis, operations director for infrastructure at VolkerFitzpatrick, said: “We are delighted to have been appointed by Road Management Services (RMS) to lead the refurbishment of the A13 River Lea Crossing.

“The upgrade works will provide a vital step towards reducing long-term disruption and will significantly improve the infrastructure for decades to come.”
