'UK first' environmentally friendly road repair method trialled in East Yorkshire

The two schemes are estimated to cost around around £265,000

A new trial is underway, aiming to use more environmentally friendly methods for repairing the roads in East Yorkshire.

The two schemes are estimated to cost around around £265,000 and 'embrace the latest materials to reduce the carbon footprint of road improvements.'

One such example of this work is on Pasture Road in Goole. This road has recently undergone resurfacing work using a product developed by Tarmac that uses granulated rubber from recycled tyres.

So far, this has only been used in a handful of locations across the UK. It is the first rubber-modified asphalt in the UK to receive approval from the British Board of Agreement Highway Authorities Product Approval Scheme Certification for Highways Products and Systems.

According to Tarmac, "when combined with its ULTILOW warm mix technology, further sustainability benefits are achieved, saving an average of 3.5kg of CO2 equivalent per tonne compared to traditional asphalt, the material used to repair road surfaces."

In another eco-friendly trial, a section of Edinburgh Street in Goole will be the first road in Yorkshire to use a new carbon-negative material. Work starts on Monday, November 4, and will last up to two weeks.

East Riding of Yorkshire Council, who are leading the trial alongside contractors PBS Construction Ltd, say that it's a 'UK first'. For this trial, a material known as ACLA is used. This product is being used in the binder course of the resurfacing, capturing and storing CO2 within the product and preventing its release into the atmosphere.

Councillor Paul West, the council’s cabinet member for environment and transport, said: “The council is leading the way in using low carbon methods and testing the latest technology to repair and resurface roads to benefit the environment and road users.
