The Big Idea - Finalist in Focus | Rota line Thermoplastic Road marking

Today we focus on one of our Big Idea finalists, Rota Line Thermoplastic Road Marking.

Rota line is a method of applying thermoplastic road marking using the rotation of a sacrificial wheel to generate friction and melt the thermoplastic onto the road. The thermoplastic used is conventional certified marking. The typical film thickness is around 250 micron allowing much less thermoplastic to be used as recommended in the transforming roadmarking report. The big idea is that much less energy is used in the application of the thermoplastic around one percent of that currently used, this could reduce the worlds carbon dioxide pollution by about one hundred thousandth if adopted world wide.

In their submission, Mark Barry explains “I consider traditional thermoplastic is under threat because of rising prices in raw materials and higher energy costs. A great deal of the expertise is invested in thermoplastic , this method of application is a bridge to use less energy all from the grid. We have extensive experience of thermoplastic roadmarking and supply some of the leading companies involve.”

When Product Markings were asked if they were to win The Big Idea Final, how would they utilise their sponsorship, Mark answered “We need help to get contractors using Rota Line. . To get contractors to adopt new ideas is very hard , they are driven by present demands. Rota line is cheaper because less is applied and less energy used but this needs to be sold to the contractor. To produce the petrol driven applicator has taken some time but the line it produces is acceptable. We think it is best for applying over worn existing markings (recovery) it can also be used for blacking out.”

“They (Tier One Contractor) may also have the expertise to sell to Local Authorities on the basis of cost saving and being green.”

As a part of this year's SHL!ve Safer Highways set a big idea challenge to SME and start up organisations to come up with solutions to challenges we currently face as a sector.

The final will take place in the Galliford Try keynote theatre on the afternoon of the event.

To be held at East Midlands Conference Centre on 29th September 2022. The event will The Big Idea, with the live final in the afternoon of the full day programme.
