Network Rail has reinforced its message to employees and contractors to stay safe and to look out for themselves and for each other following news of a tragic accident at the construction site at Gatwick Airport station.
Clive Berrington, group commercial and procurement director, wrote to Network Rail’s supply chain informing them that a construction worker had died in the early hours of Friday 22 July following an incident on site. The worker was employed by Kilnbridge, a subcontractor to principal contractor Costain.
The person involved was acting as a slinger, controlling a lift of steelwork by a tower crane on site.
Network Rail group safety and engineering director Martin Frobisher spoke with the Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB), which confirmed it was not a ‘rail’ accident, so the investigation is being conducted by the Health and Safety Executive and the British Transport Police.
“We will be working closely with the contractors and the regulator to understand exactly what has happened and we will be sharing that information with the industry when it becomes available,” he said.
