SHL!ve to play host to pop up barbers with qualified mental health trained staff

SHL!ve 2022 will become the first event in our sector to offer attendees a free haircut and a chat about mental health as the Lions Barbers Collective open a pop up shop at the event.

Founded byTom Chapman after losing a friend to suicide, Torquay based barber decided to do something about the biggest killer of young men in the UK.

In 2015 founded the Lions Barber Collective, an international group of barbers who have undergone training in how to recognise symptoms of mental ill health in clients and signpost them to relevant support services.

The group helps to raise awareness of mental illness and aims to prevent suicide by creating training that enables barbers to recognise, talk and listen out for symptoms of depression.

Speaking about why cutting hair and mental health support have a synergy, Tom said,

"As barbers we are in a unique position to help our clients, through the trust and bond we build with them. An incredibly strong relationship where clients become friends and can share aspect of their lives with us, then walk out the shop and leave it behind knowing it goes no further because of client confidentiality and the fact we are often not in their social circle."

As well as free hair cuts at the event Tom and the Lions barbers collective will be delivering a Ted Talk in the keynote theatre about the groups aims and aspirations and chairing an open and honest panel discussion in our One Million Lives Hub.

To be held at East Midlands Conference Centre on 29th September 2022. The event will incorporate both Respect our Roadworkers week and The Big Idea, with the live final in the afternoon of the full day programme.

SH L!ve is made up of indoor and outdoor exhibition zones showcasing the latest innovation, products, concepts and services in the health, safety and wellbeing sector, alongside several unique feature areas that will bring all the latest insight.

Already 80% of places for the event have been taken with over nine weeks until we open the doors.
