Temporary measures at an accident "hot spot" junction are to stay in place while a safety review is carried out.
Stop signs are being installed on the exit slip roads at junction 37 on the M6 near Kendal.
National Highways said they were being installed after two women died in a crash on the road earlier this month.
It said a review of safety would determine whether the signs remained.
As well as the signs on exit roads from the M6 to the A684, the northbound slip road will also be reduced to a single lane with traffic cones.
A spokesperson for the agency said: "This work is presently being undertaken to encourage drivers to reduce their speed and improve driver awareness of the junctions."
Tim Farron, the Liberal Democrat MP for Westmorland and Lonsdale, said he was "extremely hopeful" the safety measures would become permanent.
It has not yet been confirmed when the safety review will be completed.
