Safer Highways have announced that Martin Worthington, chairman of the organisation for the last four years, is to retire at the end of 2021.
The announcement also coincides with Martin's retirement from his role as SHEQ Director of Morgan Sindall Infrastructure, which also takes place at the end of this calendar year.
During his time as Chairman of Safer Highways, Martin has presided over the launch of both the Thriving at Work Survey, supporting employers around provision of support to the workforce around mental health and also been a driving force behind the Stamp it Out campaign to end Roadworker Abuse as well being instrumental in the launch of the Highways Heroes awards and the industry-wide safety stand down event SHL!ve.
He has also been at the side of Chief Executive Kevin Robinson and been a driving force in championing the tier 2 and 3 contractors need for clarity and equality of support, not just during the Covid crisis but also beyond.
Safer Highways Chief Executive, Kevin Robinson was the first to lead the tributes to his mentor and friend, he said,
"Martin Worthington, what can I say; for four years he has been the constant by my side and I will miss you.
"Where I was the hotheaded firebrand who would fight my way out of a paper bag, Martin was the calming influence who has, over time taught me that sometimes you need to pick your battles.
"From our Friday lunch time fish finger sandwiches and chips over a pint in Manchester or a Chinese in Leicester Square, Martin has been far more than just a chairman, he has been a friend and a confidant, and, at times a rock I have desperately needed to lean upon.
"His passionate belief in everything which Safer Highways stands for has been unwavering, I remember now the day that I pitched to him and others the idea for our mental health programme and how I wanted to achieve our goals. Others wavered, and questioned my approach, not Martin, he backed me to the hilt and ensured I didn't have to do things alone by offering his own team at Morgan Sindall to support where necessary.
"Above all, though, the facts speak for themselves. When Martin became the chairman we had 40 members, we now have 165 and that is credit to how he, as a figurehead has led the organisation. We now are perceived as a real influencer within the industry and for that Mr Worthington, my friend, you need to take a bow."
Speaking about his retirement on social media Martin said,
"I can only reflect, with an immense pride, on being given the opportunity to being part of something that has really made a difference to the industry on so many fronts.
"From those early days at Old Trafford Cricket Ground and seeing the growth of a band of like minded colleagues it’s been an extraordinary experience so thank you to everyone for your support and friendship over the last 4 years plus.
"The vision, energy and passion given to the SH cause by my great friend Mr Kevin Robinson has been outstanding and I can only salute you for that sir. I’m sure I will able to contribute in some way, shape and form over the coming months but what is for sure is that Safer Highways will go from strength to strength over the coming years given the commitment of all those involved. Onwards and upwards !
The search for a new chairman of Safer Highways has already begun and will be announced in due course with Martin becoming a specialist advisor to the Chief Executive.
