Amey: Reaching the peak for Cancer Research UK

Teams across Amey plc have been challenging themselves throughout the month of August to raise money for Cancer Research UK and celebrate 100 years of Amey.

The Amey Centenary Challenge is an exciting, fundraising activity, encouraging Amey employees to engage in various activities and help raise money for the company’s chosen charity.

The team on the Area 10 contract set themselves a brave challenge to climb Snowdon and complete 100 exercises each day throughout one week in August. Staff came together to show their support for such a worthy cause, having raised over £2000 in the first two weeks of the Area 10 challenge.

The team across the Area 10 contract separated into three groups to attempt the climb up the highest mountain in England and Wales at an astounding 1085m. Snowdon’s rugged, steep and rocky terrain proved challenging for many however the team were determined to succeed in their trek, taking in the breath-taking views across Snowdonia.

Liam Slater, Amey’s Area Manager on the Area 10 contract, who took part in the challenge, said: “I have never taken part in a challenge to walk up Snowdon before and I was very excited to experience it.

“The first 500 yards from the car park was the hardest for me. I was so relieved when the initial incline levelled off! Unfortunately, the weather wasn’t the clearest on the day, so I was unable to see the views I had heard so much about. However, that means I will have to do it again at some point.

“Cancer research is a charity close to my heart as my mum died of cancer in August 2004 and this was the driving force for me even attempting the walk. All round it was a great experience and brilliant to be able to contribute to the centenary challenge personally.”

James Ellam, Amey’s Area 10 Supervisor, said: “I really enjoyed the walk. We witnessed some great views once we descended towards the bottom.

“It was good to get to know some colleagues on a more personal level away from the work environment. Taking part in the Centenary challenge had an extra incentive for me as my partner, Corinne, has recently been diagnosed with breast cancer, therefore being able to help raise money for Cancer Research UK was an opportunity not to be missed!”

Lucy Fell, Amey’s Account Director on the Area 10 contract, said: “The support has been overwhelming. It has been great to see all the Area 10 community come together to raise money for such a great cause. Many of us will have been affected by cancer in some way and everyone is completing the challenge for their own personal reason. Thanks to everyone who has donated so far. We can all play our part to beat cancer and help bring forward the day when all cancers are cured. Please donate if you can, however big or small.” https://fundraise.cancerresearchuk.org/page/the-snowdon-100-challenge

Clare Lappin, Partnerships Manager at Cancer Research UK, commented: “We’ve been so touched with how Amey employees have embraced our charity partnership, and particularly blown away with the recent success of the Centenary challenge, raising vital funds to help fund our life-saving work. We’re so grateful for Amey’s support and congratulate them on the wonderful milestone of raising £100,000.”

Cancer Research UK’s pioneering work into the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer has helped save millions of lives. The charity has been at the heart of the progress that has already seen survival in the UK double in the last 40 years. Today, 2 in 4 people survive their cancer for at least 10 years. Cancer Research UK’s ambition is to accelerate progress so that by 2034, 3 in 4 people will survive their cancer for at least 10 years.

Amey’s partnership with Cancer Research UK focuses on three core strands: raising awareness of cancer, fundraising and volunteer work. This will help Amey employees have the information they need to be aware of their own and others health, as well as helping Cancer Research UK continue its work to beat cancer.

2021 is Amey’s centenary year and as a business there have been various celebrations taking place. Amey started out as an Oxfordshire based quarrying company leading onto an infrastructure services and engineering company at the heart of modern Britain. Amey’s ambition and innovation has allowed it to thrive and adapt over the past 100 years.
