Prosecco Pile-Up: M4 Crash Leaves Motorway Sparkling (for All the Wrong Reasons)

Motorists on the M4 were met with an unusual—and rather wasteful—sight after a collision between two lorries left thousands of bottles of prosecco scattered across the road.

The crash occurred earlier today (27 April) between junctions 13 and 14, causing major disruption and forcing the closure of the motorway while emergency services dealt with the aftermath.

According to Thames Valley Roads Policing, one of the HGVs lost its empty shipping container during the incident. The second vehicle, however, was carrying a hefty load of around 20 tonnes of Lovello prosecco—much of which ended up smashed across the carriageway.

Images from the scene show broken glass and spilled bottles covering large sections of the road, creating a significant clean-up operation. Recovery teams faced a complex task, with one lorry partially lifted off the ground and another left without its container.

One of the drivers is now being investigated for dangerous driving, with early indications suggesting that mobile phone use may have played a role in the crash.

A spokesperson for Thames Valley Roads Policing confirmed that, despite the scale of the incident, only minor injuries were reported. However, they stressed the seriousness of the situation, reminding drivers that using a phone at the wheel can have potentially life-threatening consequences.

The motorway remained closed for several hours as crews worked to clear the debris, with diversion routes put in place to manage traffic.

While the incident may have left the M4 looking more like a fizzy drinks aisle than a motorway, authorities were quick to point out that this was far from a cause for celebration.
