Transport for West Midlands (TfWM) has submitted a planning application for a new electric bus depot in Birmingham, a development expected to safeguard approximately 260 jobs while supporting the region's transition to a zero-emission public transport network.

The proposed facility would be located on Lea Ford Road on land formerly associated with the Yardley Sewage Works. The site is currently unused and largely covered by vegetation, including grassland, shrubs and mature trees.

Under the plans, the depot would include a dedicated office and workshop complex accommodating drivers, operational staff, depot management and administrative teams. The building would also house welfare facilities, engineering services and vehicle maintenance functions. A separate bus washing facility is also included within the proposals.

Planning documents submitted with the application state that the project would deliver substantial economic benefits for East Birmingham, securing around 260 permanent positions within an area identified as experiencing significant levels of deprivation.

In addition to employment benefits, the scheme is expected to support more efficient bus operations across the region. According to the design and access statement, the introduction of the depot could reduce operational mileage by more than 650,000 kilometres across 13 bus routes, helping to lower running costs while contributing to wider economic and environmental objectives.

The depot forms part of broader efforts to expand electric bus infrastructure across the West Midlands and support the transition towards cleaner, more sustainable public transport services.
