Nottingham City Transport (NCT) has announced a series of timetable and route changes across its network that will take effect from 21 June, as the operator continues to respond to changing travel patterns, rising costs and ongoing financial pressures.

The revised network will include service withdrawals, route alterations and timetable adjustments, alongside targeted improvements on selected corridors where demand remains strong.

Passenger Demand Still Lagging Behind

NCT says the changes come after a detailed review of passenger numbers and route performance, with some services no longer attracting enough passengers to cover their operating costs.

Like many public transport operators across the UK, the company reports that passenger demand has not fully recovered since the Covid-19 pandemic. According to NCT, the network continues to carry around 10% fewer passengers than before the pandemic, with increased home working, hybrid working arrangements and the growth of online shopping all contributing to lower travel demand.

The operator also cited rising operating costs, ongoing roadworks across Nottingham and changes to the national bus fare cap as factors affecting ridership and service viability.

Service Reductions and Route Changes

As part of the network review, several routes will see reductions in service frequency, particularly during periods of lower demand.

NCT confirmed that some services will operate fewer journeys before 9am on Saturdays and during evening periods. The company said concentrating resources during busier daytime hours will help maintain the overall sustainability of the network.

Several routes will also undergo significant alterations, with sections being replaced or incorporated into alternative services.

Among those affected are:

  • Blue 40

  • Green 11

  • Lilac 24

  • Navy 3 and 3A

  • Purple 88

  • Turquoise 79A

The Green 11 service will be reconfigured to focus on serving the Meadows and Lady Bay areas, with the existing extension to Cropwell Bishop transferred to a new route. NCT says the change is intended to improve service reliability and reduce operational challenges.

Improvements for Clifton and Ruddington

Despite the reductions elsewhere, the revised network also includes investment in areas where passenger demand is growing.

One of the most notable improvements will see daytime services between Clifton and Ruddington increase from hourly to every 30 minutes.

A new direct connection between Ruddington and West Bridgford town centre will also be introduced, improving access to shopping, employment and leisure destinations for local residents.

Balancing Costs and Connectivity

NCT Head of Operations David Conway said the operator has been forced to balance rising operating costs against lower passenger demand when designing the new network.

The challenge mirrors issues being faced by bus operators nationwide, many of whom continue to adjust services in response to changing commuting habits and increasing financial pressures.

While some passengers will face service reductions or route changes, NCT says the revised network has been designed to protect the busiest services and maintain as much connectivity as possible within available resources.

Wider Challenges Facing the Bus Sector

The changes in Nottingham reflect broader trends across the UK bus industry, where operators continue to navigate a post-pandemic landscape marked by fluctuating demand, increasing fuel and labour costs, and uncertainty around long-term funding arrangements.

As local authorities and operators seek to maintain essential public transport links, network reviews such as Nottingham’s are becoming increasingly common as companies attempt to balance financial sustainability with community transport needs.

For Nottingham passengers, the June changes will mark another chapter in the ongoing evolution of the city's bus network as operators adapt to a rapidly changing transport environment.
