National Highways signs up for closer working with European counterparts

A group of European highways authorities have today declared an intention to work more collaboratively with one another.

At the Highways UK tradeshow at the Birmingham NEC today, representatives of England’s National Highways came together with counterparts from Die Autobahn of Germany, and the Rijkswaterstaat of the Netherlands, to sign a memorandum of agreement.

The agreement is intended to establish a platform for effective co-operation and understanding between the authorities. This will involve communication between all parties, as well as the creation of opportunities for the exchange of ideas, information and even staff.

Nick Harris, Chief Executive of National Highways, signed the memorandum on behalf of the company.

He said: “I am very happy to sign this memorandum on behalf of National Highways.

“We can only benefit from closer collaboration with other agencies, and we hope these relationships will support us in achieving our strategic objectives and continuing to develop our ways of working.”

The specific areas of interest regarding the relationship are the safety, digitalisation, resilience and governance of the relevant road networks.

The relationship will cover a period of two years, and will seek to address points and programmes relevant to the above key areas.
