National Highways bridging the gap across A45 for pedestrians and cyclists

Pedestrians and cyclists will soon be able to take advantage of a new, more modern bridge spanning the A45/A46 Festival Interchange near Coventry.

The previous footbridge, which spans the A45 westbound entry slip, was removed earlier this year because it did not meet modern standards.

The replacement will raise the headroom under the bridge and is wider to enable cyclists and pedestrians to better use the footpath safely. It will also be more accessible for people with disabilities.

The bridge, which leads to Baginton Mill Allotments, will be installed this weekend (Friday 15 October to Monday 18 October).

It will be transported as an abnormal load from Kent in two parts to be lowered into place on site.

To ensure the safety of workers and road users, a number of closures are needed from midnight on Friday until 5am on Monday as follows:

  • A46 northbound exit slip road

  • A45 westbound to Leaf Lane and the A444

  • A444 southbound to A45 westbound

National Highways Project Manager, Patricia Dray, said:

“We appreciate that any road closures can be disruptive and only do so when absolutely necessary. This is a complex operation to lower the bridge across the width of the A45 slip road and it is important that the safety of workers are protected in doing so.

“Once in place, pedestrians and cyclists will be able to enjoy a more modern, spacious and safer bridge that will benefit generations of local people for many years to come.”

Drivers are urged to follow the signed diversion routes, agreed with the local authority, which will be in place.

Works are subject to change depending on weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances.
