An opposition MP has secured Government support for new measures aimed at tackling fly-tipping, in what he described as a significant step forward for rural communities.
South Shropshire MP Stuart Anderson has backed proposals to give police additional powers to penalise offenders, including the introduction of penalty points on driving licences for those caught illegally dumping waste.
The move follows pressure from Conservative MPs, with the Government agreeing to adopt the measure despite earlier resistance from some Labour backbenchers, who had opposed a similar amendment to the Crime and Policing Bill.
Mr Anderson said the decision would help protect communities that take pride in maintaining clean and safe environments. He highlighted the scale of the issue, noting that more than 1.2 million fly-tipping incidents were recorded across the UK last year.
He described the agreement as a positive outcome for rural areas, where illegal dumping can have a particularly visible impact on the environment and local quality of life.
Looking ahead, Mr Anderson added that he and colleagues are continuing to push for further enforcement powers, including proposals to allow authorities to seize and destroy vehicles used in fly-tipping offences.
