National Highways has confirmed that the M27 resurfacing project is now entering its final phase. Work on the westbound carriageway is nearly finished, with all traffic now running over the new low-noise asphalt.

The previous contraflow has been removed, allowing three lanes to reopen on the westbound approach to junctions 7, 5, and 4. Crews are currently dismantling hardened crossover sections that were used earlier in the scheme.

Richard Scrase, programme delivery manager at National Highways, said:

“Completing resurfacing over more than 5km of the motorway marks a significant milestone. The work between junctions 5 and 7 was essential as the previous surface had reached the end of its service life. This upgrade ensures the road remains safe and reliable for drivers.”

He added:

“We understand that journey times and congestion have increased since the removal of the contraflow lane on the westbound carriageway and are sorry for the frustration this may have caused. We’ll be carrying out further work overnight on Saturday which will improve traffic flow.”

To allow this work to be carried out safely, the westbound carriageway will be closed between junctions 5 and 4 from 9pm Saturday until 6am Sunday. Overnight eastbound closures between junctions 4 and 8 will also continue until the end of the month while barriers are removed and other finishing work is completed.

Mr Scrase added:

“Closures can be frustrating, and I want to thank road users for their ongoing patience. We only put them in place when necessary for the safety of those travelling and working on the road.”

The improvements also include enhanced drainage along the route and measures to make the central reservation safer. Following completion of these final works, technology installations will be carried out, with the project expected to continue into the spring.
