MOTORISTS faced severe delays as part of the M1 remains completely closed due to flooding caused by Storm Franklin.
Both directions are shut between junction 34 for Sheffield north and Meadowhall and junction 33 for Rotherham, South Yorkshire. The road has become flooded after Storm Franklin lashed heavy rainfall across the UK. It's the third storm the UK has faced in the space of one week.
Motorway cameras at 6.30am showed severe congestion on the M1 today (Monday February 21).
Other sections of the road - including the stretch near junction 31 for Workshop, Nottinghamshire, were closed due to flooding last night but have since reopened.
South Yorkshire Police and National Highways Traffic Officers are at junction 34, it is understood.
A yellow weather warning remains in force for most of the country - including South Yorkshire - as gales of up to 80mph are expected today.
Elsewhere, a section of the M60 has been fully closed off this morning due to an overturned lorry.
The motorway is currently shut on Barton Bridge, between junction 10 for the Trafford Centre and junction 11 for Liverpool Road.
A LGV has overturned, motorway police said.
No injuries have been reported.
People have been urged to avoid the area as traffic is diverted away from the scene.
In a tweet, TfGM said: "FULL CLOSURE on M60 between J10 and J11, in both directions, due to an overturned vehicle.
The M6 is also closed after a lorry set fire when high winds caused it to crash into a bridge.
The driver was helped by other motorists to escape from the cab and is being assessed in hospital.
Lancashire Road Police tweeted: "High winds caused this HGV to hit a bridge and burst into flames on M6.
"Driver luckily escaped from cab with help from other motorists and is being assessed at hospital."
Storm Franklin is battering parts of the UK, with severe flood warnings leading to more than 70 homes being evacuated in Manchester and widespread flooding in Yorkshire.
Gales of up to 60mph are predicted across the country.
