Komatsu UK has begun manufacturing its latest excavator model, the PC220, at the company’s production facility in Newcastle, marking a major investment in British manufacturing and advanced engineering capability.
The launch of the new machine is supporting around 200 jobs at the site, including 21 apprentices, while reinforcing the company’s long-term commitment to the North East’s industrial sector.
Advanced Technology and Improved Performance
Described by Komatsu as its most sophisticated excavator to date, the PC220 has been developed to deliver improvements in operational efficiency, operator safety and overall machine comfort.
The company says the decision to manufacture the excavator in the UK strengthens its European supply network by positioning production closer to customers, helping reduce delivery times and improve responsiveness across regional markets.
Paul Dickinson, crawler excavator product manager at Komatsu Europe, said the move demonstrates continued confidence in both the Newcastle facility and the expertise of its workforce.
He explained that producing one of Komatsu’s most advanced machines in the UK reflects the high standards, technical capability and dedication of employees across the business.
Focus on Sustainability and Supply Efficiency
Komatsu also highlighted the environmental advantages of manufacturing closer to its customer base.
According to Dickinson, shorter transportation routes will help lower overall product mileage and reduce associated carbon emissions, while improving supply chain efficiency for distributors and customers throughout Europe.
He added that local manufacturing remains an important part of Komatsu’s strategy to maintain product quality and reliability while working closely with customers to deliver long-term value.
Investment in Modern Manufacturing
To support production of the new excavator, Komatsu UK has introduced several advanced manufacturing systems at the Newcastle plant.
These upgrades include precision scanning technology within fabrication processes and laser-guided systems in final assembly operations.
The business has also invested in workforce development, providing employees with training in new digital systems and software tools as construction equipment becomes increasingly technology-driven.
Commitment to the North East
The introduction of PC220 production is being viewed internally as an important milestone for Komatsu’s operations in the North East.
The company says the project strengthens its long-term manufacturing presence in the region while helping sustain highly skilled engineering and production roles for the future.
With continued investment in technology, apprenticeships and workforce development, Komatsu believes the Newcastle facility will remain a key part of its European manufacturing strategy in the years ahead.
