A West End road has been closed for months after “cracks” appeared on the surface and it became unstable
Scottish Green councillor Martha Wardrop said residents are under stress over the situation on Queen Margaret Road and told how the roadway has been closed since August 25.
A council meeting heard there are instability problems and it is likely to be months before the road section next to the 60 steps by Kelvinside Terrace South reopens.
Speaking after the meeting, Councillor Martha Wardrop, Scottish Greens said “cracks appeared on the road surface.”
The Hillhead politician added: “The longer it stays closed the more anxious people are.”
During the council meeting last week, councillor Wardrop asked when a condition survey will be carried out.
Councillor Ruairi Kelly, SNP, said: “The issue with the condition of Queen Margaret Road was highlighted to the roads maintenance team on November 16 last year and following official inspection by the team a road closure was immediately put into place.”
He added: “Initial ground investigation and surveys undertaken to date indicate substantial repair will be required before Kelvinside Terrace South (adjacent road) is stabilised.
In the meantime it is considered necessary for safety reasons that this section of the road remain closed to vehicles for the foreseeable future.”
The convenor for neighbourhood services and assets said it will be months before the road reopens “due to the extent of the required repairs.”
A geotechnical investigation consultant is due to carry out the surveys and investigation.
Councillor Kelly added: “I know the roads maintenance team is progressing this as quickly as possible so that a permanent solution to rectify the instability can be designed and implemented following the results from this investigation.”
Replying to his answer, councillor Wardrop said: “This roadway has been closed since August 25. It is next to the 60 steps and it is an important historic landscape within the West End.
“I’m concerned there has not been a timescale given even in the answer today. Obviously people are living in this community under a great deal of stress and anxiety about their own house condition.
The geotechnical survey is obviously very important to everyone – to know as soon as possible what findings there are and what impact it is going to have on the wider community there.
So this has been going on for sometime with a lack of information provided.”
She asked for a meeting to be held as a matter of urgency with Councillor Kelly, ward councillors and residents to discuss it further. Councillor Kelly agreed.
