Galliford Try duo shortlisted for Scottish Ex-Forces in Business Awards

Galliford Try is proud to announce that two members of its team have been named finalists in the third annual Scottish edition of the Ex-Forces in Business Awards, the world’s largest celebration of veterans in second careers.

Gavin Slater, Health Safety and Sustainability Advisor for Morrison Construction, has been shortlisted for Team Leader of the Year, while Scott Findlay, Senior Supervisor for the Environment business, is a finalist for the Engineering Excellence Award.

Gavin and Scott were whittled down from over 250 veterans and reservists, with the aim being to recognise the value veterans add to businesses as well as the employers that support the transition of servicemen and women.

Galliford Try is proud to have pledged its commitment to The Armed Forces Corporate Covenant since 2016, working in partnership with the Career Transition Partnership (CTP) to support leavers of the military to transition into a civilian career. Its Ex-Military Programme has been shaped by the experiences of Galliford Try employees who have previously worked or continue to work with the military. The programme provides the opportunity for individuals to turn their experience, adaptability and strong work ethic to a civilian role, supporting them both professionally and personally.

Scott, who served on two operational tours in Iraq and Afghanistan as a sniper and member of the Royal Armoured Corps said: “I am over the moon with the nomination and can’t thank the Galliford Try team enough for putting me forward for this fantastic award.”

Gavin, who joined Galliford Try after serving in the Army as a mechanic added: “I am honoured to have been put forward for this award, it means a lot to me.”

Bill Hocking, Chief Executive of Galliford Try, said: “Very well done to Gavin and Scott on being shortlisted for these prestigious awards. As an Ex-Services friendly organisation, we recognise this exceptional talent and strong values of those in and from the Services and these awards demonstrate the value this community is adding to civilian roles up and down the country.”

Lt. Gen. Sir Andrew Gregory, CEO at SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity, said: “As a former Chief of Defence People, and now CEO at SSAFA where one of our services is the provision of mentoring to assist those service leavers who need support during their transition, I am very aware of the challenges during the move into Civvy Street and just how crucial role models are. It is heartening to see such a large volume and breadth of employers acknowledging the skills and values of those who have served their country.”

Ben Rossi, founder of the Ex-Forces in Business Awards, said: “The large variety of companies and sectors represented on this impressive shortlist of finalists speaks volumes to the vast breadth of talent in the veterans talent pool. Savvy employers across all industries are getting wise to the exceptional value that veterans and the wider Armed Forces community offer and we’re very proud to lead the way in showcasing that value.”

The winners will be decided by an independent judging panel made up of 22 veterans and business leaders from major Scottish employers including the Scottish Government. The winners will be announced at a glittering ceremony on 25 May in the Hilton Glasgow’s Grand Ballroom hosted by TV presenter and Invictus Games gold medallist JJ Chalmers and including, as a guest speaker, Keith Brown MSP, Cabinet Secretary for Justice and Veterans.
