A Leicestershire council has launched an appeal for information after fly-tippers dumped a massive tree trunk in the middle of a road, creating a serious hazard for motorists.

The incident happened on Ullesthorpe Road near Ashby Parva, where the large trunk, along with other household rubbish, was discovered blocking part of the highway. Harborough District Council said the waste was reported on Tuesday, although it is believed to have been dumped overnight or during the early hours beforehand.

Council workers were forced to cut the trunk into smaller sections before moving it from the road to restore safe access for drivers.

Officials described the incident as dangerous and are asking residents who may have witnessed suspicious activity, or seen a vehicle transporting a large tree, to come forward with information.

David Page, cabinet lead for neighbourhood services at the council, condemned the actions of those responsible. He said the dumped waste created unsafe conditions for road users and warned that offences such as fly-tipping and obstructing the highway could lead to criminal prosecution.

Page added that the council acted swiftly to clear the area and protect public safety, but stressed that local taxpayers would ultimately bear the cost of the clean-up operation. He also warned that the authority intends to pursue those responsible and hold them accountable for the expense and disruption caused.

The council continues to investigate the incident and is urging anyone with relevant information to assist with enquiries.
