Floods trial could see volunteers close off roads

Volunteers are being recruited in Herefordshire in a trial that could see local residents close off roads in the event of flooding.

The Community Flood Signage scheme is initially being piloted in the village of Orleton.

The aim is to prevent vehicles driving though flood water, as well as preventing accidents, breakdowns, and damage to properties caused by the water.

"By serving as a community flood signage volunteer, people can help their local areas at the most critical time – that of a flooding incident," said Ross Cook, from Herefordshire Council.

It is hoped that in the future, the scheme could be rolled out to other areas of the county.

It is being created on behalf of the authority by Balfour Beatty Living Places, which provides highways maintenance, street lighting and public realm services.

Mr Cook said volunteers did not need any previous experience, and would need to attend a short training session, with a refresher course every three years.

The courses would cover water safety, risk control, road safety and sign set up.

The scheme has taken inspiration from Nottinghamshire County Council, which has a similar program.
