A key route in Gloucestershire has been suddenly closed this afternoon (Tuesday, October 29). Gloucestershire County Council acted after what it described as a 'unforeseen void' appeared on Rodborough Hill, Stroud.
Voids are described as gaps below the surface of the road. Along with sinkholes and subsidence, they can cause dangers for road users.
On X, formerly twitter, Gloucestershire Highways said: "Due to an unforeseen void appearing within the carriageway, it is necessary for a 24-hour road closure. This is for the safety of the public and will remain in place until further notice. Our teams will be working to resolve as soon as safely possible."
Rodborough Hill runs north-south, linking the A46 Bath Road with the crossroads junction with Walkley Hill and Butterrow West. The county council always stressed the importance of motorists not removing road closure signs or attempting to drive through closed roads.
It is understood the void, described by locals as a sinkhole, is outside Rodborough School, but there is still access along the road for pedestrians. Pictures shared on social media show road closure with highways staff working there.
