Efforts to reopen Doncaster Sheffield Airport have taken a major step forward after councillors agreed to continue supporting a £57 million loan package linked to the project.

The decision follows several weeks of political debate surrounding the airport’s finances and the level of oversight attached to the funding arrangements.

At a specially convened meeting of Doncaster Council, members voted to back the revised agreement, allowing the reopening programme to move ahead. The funding package is regarded as a crucial element of wider plans to restore operations at the airport, which shut down in 2022.

The dispute centred on concerns raised by Reform UK councillors, who argued that additional scrutiny was needed over lease agreements involving the airport site and landowner Peel Group. The party called for councillors to reconsider the financial arrangements before further commitments were made.

Labour councillors, however, warned that delaying or withdrawing support for the funding could seriously threaten the future of the reopening project.

Following negotiations, councillors approved a revised structure that maintains financial backing while introducing stronger monitoring measures requested during the debate. These changes include additional council oversight if lease terms are renegotiated in the future.

Council leaders said the outcome now allows discussions with Peel Group to continue and enables reopening preparations to progress alongside work being carried out with the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority.

The £57 million funding package is expected to support a range of activities connected to the airport’s return, including infrastructure improvements, operational readiness and investment aimed at attracting passenger and freight services back to the site.

Supporters of the scheme, including business organisations and local campaign groups, described the vote as an important milestone in efforts to revive aviation activity in the region and generate new employment opportunities.

Doncaster Sheffield Airport, previously known as Robin Hood Airport, ceased operations in late 2022 after owner Peel Group cited ongoing financial pressures and the loss of airline services.

Since the closure, regional authorities and political leaders have worked on proposals to bring the airport back into use as part of a broader economic regeneration strategy for South Yorkshire.

Recent activity at the site has included operational testing and discussions with prospective airline operators. In April, a Boeing 727 operated by aviation company Excel landed at the airport, becoming the first large aircraft to arrive there since the closure.

Current projections suggest the reopening will happen in stages, with full passenger operations not expected before 2028.
