Passengers are now using the expanded Darlington station following the completion of a major £140 million redevelopment programme described as one of the most significant investments on the East Coast Main Line in recent years.

The project has delivered two new platforms, a major station concourse upgrade and a new step-free footbridge as part of wider efforts to improve rail capacity, accessibility and connectivity across the region.

Delivered by Bam UK & Ireland alongside Network Rail and a wider partnership including LNER, Siemens, the Tees Valley Combined Authority and Darlington Borough Council, the scheme was completed while the historic Victorian station remained fully operational.

At the centre of the upgrade are new platforms 5 and 6, which are expected to improve operational flexibility and support additional rail services in the future as passenger demand continues to grow.

The redevelopment also included the installation of a new 50-tonne footbridge providing step-free access to the new platforms via lifts and escalators.

Due to the constraints of the Grade II-listed station, engineers were required to assemble the bridge in sections before carefully sliding it into position through temporary openings created within the heritage roof structure.

Bam UK & Ireland transport managing director Richard Prime said the project required highly complex planning and engineering coordination to protect the station’s historic fabric while delivering modern infrastructure improvements.

Alongside the rail works, the scheme has also introduced a new eastern concourse, upgraded station entrances, new stairways and escalators, a multi-storey car park with more than 600 spaces and improved cycling facilities including new bike shelters and active travel links.

LNER managing director David Horne described the completion of the project as an important milestone for the town, noting that Darlington is currently the fastest-growing station on the LNER network.

Network Rail East Coast route director Paul Rutter added that the improvements would significantly enhance the passenger experience for those travelling through the station each day.

The redevelopment forms part of wider investment plans across the East Coast Main Line aimed at improving rail capacity, accessibility and regional economic growth while supporting increasing passenger numbers across the network.
