Costain to start £150m delayed M6 Smart motorway job

Costain has been given a March start date for main works on its £150m contract to upgrade one of the busiest stretches of the M6 motorway in the north west.

The delayed smart motorway upgrade was originally expected to be completed in March 2021 but was rescheduled because of the impact on congestion in the region.

A two-year programme of works will take place along a 10-mile stretch from Warrington’s Junction 21A Croft Interchange to the Orrell Interchange at Junction 26 near Wigan.

There will be a reduced speed limit of 50mph throughout the roadworks. Where possible, and when its is safe to do so, such as over Easter and Christmas holiday breaks, this will increase this to 60mph.
