Work has officially commenced on the £28 million redevelopment of Huddersfield Bus Station, with Willmott Dixon leading the project on behalf of West Yorkshire Combined Authority and Kirklees Council.

The scheme will modernise the existing transport hub, creating a more accessible, welcoming and environmentally sustainable facility for passengers. Once completed, the station will form part of the Weaver Network, West Yorkshire's integrated public transport system.

A range of passenger-focused improvements are planned within the building, including upgraded real-time information displays providing live bus and rail travel updates to support onward connections. Enhanced security features will also be introduced, alongside improved toilet facilities, including a fully equipped Changing Places toilet designed to meet the needs of people with complex disabilities.

The redevelopment will deliver several sustainability measures, such as the installation of solar panels and a green roof. A new entrance canopy will be constructed, while additional cycle parking, refurbished retail frontages and improvements to surrounding public spaces will help create a more attractive environment for visitors and commuters.

Huddersfield Bus Station will become the third Weaver Network facility in Kirklees. It follows major investments in Dewsbury and Heckmondwike bus stations, both of which are expected to welcome passengers later this year. The wider programme is intended to improve public transport infrastructure and encourage greater use of bus services across the region.

Chris Yates, Yorkshire Director at Willmott Dixon, said the company was pleased to be delivering the project in partnership with local authorities.

He commented: "We're proud to be working alongside West Yorkshire Combined Authority and Kirklees Council to deliver a modern, sustainable transport hub that will improve connectivity for local communities.

"As part of our commitment to creating social value, we will be supporting employment, education and skills development throughout the project. Our targets include delivering 584 hours of employment support, 177 hours of engagement with schools and colleges, 398 apprentice weeks and 31 weeks of work experience opportunities. We are excited to begin work on site and contribute to the future of transport in Huddersfield."
