Changes to be made to major county route

Changes will be made to the layout of a major commuter route from next week.

As work on the A417 Missing Link continues in Gloucestershire, National Highways has reminded motorists that changes will be made near Cowley Roundabout from Monday 1 July.

There will be a weekend closure from 21:00 BST on 28 June until 06:00 BST on 1 July to allow the contraflow to be installed at Cowley junction, where the new section of the A417 will tie into the existing carriageway.

Cowley Roundabout will no longer be in use and traffic travelling south will be unable to exit towards Brimpsfield.

During the closure, traffic will be reduced to a single lane in both directions and there will be a temporary mandatory speed limit of 40mph.

Northbound traffic should follow the signed diversion via the A436, A40 and A429, with southbound advised to do the same but in reverse order.

From 1 July, National Highways will also close Stockwell Lane for approximately 18 months to prepare for the construction of the new road and bridge building.

When finished, it is hoped the £460m scheme will improve traffic from Gloucester to Swindon and Cirencester by introducing extra lanes.
